Female wood ducks are less gaudy than their male counterparts. However, when the sun strikes their feathers at the right angle, beautiful shades of blue and tan can be seen.  Canon 5D; Canon EF100 - 400mm L, IS lens (1/160, f/8, ISO 800, 400mm).

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, adjacent Reed College, is a beautiful location on the east side of Portland. One can view waterfowl and flowers in profusion.  This duckling was particularly shy and the closeup required use of a moderate (400 mm) telephoto lens and a lot of running around the lake's edge.  Canon 5D; Canon 100-400 mm f/4 IS L lens (1/320 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800, 400 mm).
